ITINERARY:
THE HISTORIC NORTH OF ETHIOPIA TOUR

DAY 1: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21
Depart USA.
DAY 2: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22
Arrive at Bole International Airport. An Awaze Tours representative will meet you and take you to your hotel. Tour the Ethnographic Museum, a great introduction to Ethiopian culture and history. Have lunch at Ethiopia’s oldest hotel “Taitu.” Visit the Mercato, one of Africa's largest outdoor markets and the Trinity Cathedral, resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie. Make a short drive to Entoto Hills for an over look of the city and visit Maryam Church. En-route, stop at Sheromeda traditional clothe market. Overnight stay and dinner at Addissinia hotel or similar.
DAY 3: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
Fly to Bahar Dar on Ethiopian Airlines. Take a boat tour on Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, and tour ancient island monasteries. Enjoy lunch at the Dessiet Lodge on the edge of the lake. Visit the marketplace in Bahar Dar. Overnight stay and dinner at Abay Minch hotel or similar.
DAY 4: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24
Morning drive to see the Blue Nile Falls. Return to Bahar Dar for lunch. In the afternoon, drive to Gondar, north of Lake Tana, stopping at the utopian village of Awra Amba. Overnight stay at Goha hotel or similar..
DAY 5: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25
Visit the remote ruins of Kuskuam, built for Empress Mentewab in the 1700’s. After lunch, tour the Royal Enclosure, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring five castles built by a succession of Ethiopian Kings beginning in the early 17th century. Having survived several wars, including air raids during World War 2, the castles are a testament to the resilience of this once mighty African Empire. Visit the church of Debre Birhan Selassie, famous for its religious art and especially its iconic ceiling depicting angels. See the baths of King Fasilides which still serves as a baptismal pool during Timkat. Dinner at the famous 4 Sisters Restaurant, and overnight stay at Goha hotel or similar.
DAY 6: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26
Drive to Sankabar the gateway to the Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take in the spectacular scenery and view wildlife such as the Gelada baboon. Light hiking in the afternoon in the park. Overnight stay at Simien Lodge or similar.
DAY 7: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27
Day trekking in the spectacular Simien Mountains National Park. Overnight stay at Simien Lodge or similar.
DAY 8: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28
Take a scenic drive to Axum, capital of the ancient Axumite Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Frequent stops at viewpoints along the way. Arrive in Axum late afternoon. Overnight stay at Sabean hotel or similar.
DAY 9: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
Tour the ancient stelae fields, standing for 2,000 years. Visit the new and impressive Archeological Museum. See St. Mary Tsion Church, which houses the Ark of the Covenant according to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (no one is allowed to see the Ark.) Visit other tombs and archeological sites as time permits. Overnight stay at Sabean hotel or similar.
DAY 10: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
Fly to Lalibela on Ethiopian Airlines. Tour the magnificent rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This group of eleven monolithic and semi-monolithic structures were carved directly into the stone of the mountainside at least 800 years ago. This complex boasts the largest monolithic church in the world, a maze of passageways and tunnels, intricately carved reliefs, and fabulous examples of icon paintings. Lunch at the famous Ben Abeba restaurant with it’s fantastic views. Overnight stay and dinner at Panoramic View hotel or similar.
DAY 11: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1
Take a morning trek with mules to Mount Asheton, with its 13th century rock-hewn monastery and great views of the town. Return to Lalibela for lunch at the Kana Restaurant or Seven Olives. In the afternoon visit the second group of rock-hewn churches in the afternoon. Overnight stay at Panoramic View hotel or similar.
DAY 12: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2
Drive to Yemrehanna Kristos, a beautiful church situated in a shallow cave that predates the churches of Lalibela. The drive to Yemrehanna will also give you the opportunity to view the rural countryside and villages of the Ethiopian highlands. Stop at Arbaytu Ensesa where the monks and nuns make hand crafts and traditional cloth. Overnight stay at Panoramic View hotel or similar.
DAY 13: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3
Fly to Addis Ababa. Visit the National Museum, home of the 3 million year old skeleton “Lucy.” Optional souvenir shopping. Enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant featuring dancers and musicians representing some of the country's many ethnic groups. Transfer to airport for late night departure or additional hotel night booked upon request.
